Upper front teeth are very often prone to fracture, lost crowns and/or failed root canals. Fortunately for our patients, Dr Bryan Edgar is able to offer an immediate implant solution which results in an esthetic tooth replacement while the implant bonds with the bone. This technique was originally developed by Dennis A. Shanelec, DDS, periodontist in southern California. Dr Edgar has been using this approach for more than 5 years and was trained by Dr Shanelec at the Microsurgical Training Institute in Santa Barbara.
This case is an example of a patient with a fracured crown below the gumline. The crown was cemented back on the root temporarily until an inplant placement appointment could be scheduled. On the day of implant placement the fractured tooth was atraumatically extracted, the implant was placed and the original crown was converted into a temporary crown attached to the root with a scew retained anchor. The following are phots and x-rays of the case.
